The theme of the show was Time, Vision and Invention and my work for this show, titled September 2007, was a reflection on the recent crackdown on monks protesting in Rangoon.

I worked with layers of red acrylic onto which I attached a nest made from fibres from the Banyan tree outside my studio. Have been busy lately and only managed time to do one square (mine is the one in center of the photograph below) but it was a good opportunity to meet some new artists and the work looked great thanks to the wonderful folk at ArtSpace who worked hard to organise the show.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh6OUvQbnlWj1qb2QIfC_zm4DO4wLPqQMC8MRCVcbY0xCDEW6a1oF6o_Y4j6MwO5xOS6NwLuDXww6N5g0lkkeYHA32Enr2rFUDjruvjIwu9JIAHSiM3KSSQhQ2fEkKrXgoY-PtrIcq-Ygw/s400/DSC01432.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5170069276668862274" />Natalie Kunsthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03807327700175263352noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4100304925529256410.post-13557214457284803662008-02-07T01:00:00.000-08:002008-02-22T01:45:59.641-08:00Loom work<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgVm0IpkSAeXCprajIlrgWYm7QPeL01kaI21viP_TbmyMqwdOrRYwqzEUFM-OoUEhgph4jAqfexCpiF80RzYb4B57T4ISBS_G8KvXMyqxXUpsXovWhba6M5xx0oiuaA9OHgQ1OIlCx44PA/s400/DSC00844.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5164163776544566994" />
A new direction! She is based in Rangoon where she runs Soulflower Gallery and a children's art workshop. She paints, does performance art, curates, writes, teaches, dances ....
I first met Chaw Ei at the Asiatopia Symposium where she did an awesome performance piece on the current climate in Burma and delivered a paper on Performance Art in Burma. Before talking with Chaw Ei, I hadn't realised how exciting the developing contemporary art culture in Rangoon is, despite the huge obstacles the artists face. Chaw Ei gave a talk to my students about these challenges and ways that the artistic community attempts to overcome them.

Natalie Kunsthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03807327700175263352noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4100304925529256410.post-86214022833797213072007-12-07T08:34:00.000-08:002007-12-07T23:55:41.881-08:00TransmigrateI have just bundled up and sent off some work from my Transmigrate series to 4a Gallery (Asia Australia Arts Center) in Sydney for the 10th Annual Members Exhibition.

Natalie Kunsthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03807327700175263352noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4100304925529256410.post-83676679672637382882007-11-22T08:13:00.000-08:002008-02-22T01:49:00.032-08:00Journey of Kumjing

I love this project! It's called The Journey of Kumjing and is coordinated by Chantawipa and Chumporn Apisuk in collaboration with Empower Foundation. It comments on the experience of women migrant workers in Thailand. The project began back in 2003 with the production of paper mache 'dolls' by migrant workers in Mae Sai, Thailand. Each 'doll' has an identity and a pink passport which allows them, unlike most migrant workers to be able to travel freely and safely. The dolls have travelled to variety of cities in Thailand and countries abroad, attending conferences and some have even been 'adopted' by foreigners.

I recently met Chumporn Apisuk at Asiatopia in Chiang Mai. I love this project in that it reaches broadly into the community with artists working working migrant women to construct the dolls. And a large part of this project seems to be educating the Thai and foreign communities about the conditions that Burmese migrant women face in Thailand. I also think it's a great project for its longevity.

<img style="display:block; This performance was inspired by the infamous congenital twins Chang and Eng Bunker, who originally came from Thailand (Siam is old name for Thailand). Angkrit and Hafiz remained connected for 24 continuous hours and as they went about their business, distributed information about the Bunker twins. Angkrit told me he was drawn to the idea of becoming a siamese twin for a day as he was interested in the construction of Thai identity as oriental, exotic and freakish.

More photos

Last year I saw a group exhibition Platform at Queens Gallery in which Angkrit exhibited an installation "The Perfect English Gentleman" which documented his transformation to being a 'perfect English Gentleman'. Angkrit is the Thai word for English.Natalie Kunsthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03807327700175263352noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4100304925529256410.post-31848612877478260772007-11-12T08:42:00.000-08:002007-11-18T08:12:40.528-08:009th Asiatopia<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiaFGwM22R8dXbLspCFFdC4cgD-FQUBPJMIgyezzmBzxVqMZ5q-xsNQ5wv8_nAb1hai-jniwl2Su8vmr3BUFadHprVdCl-idv9owQNDKMtZnX6YNQHat0V3FOJBSZVYwsSGFOa8kZromck/s400/Vasan.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5134213880396535698" />
I have spent the last few days at the 9th Asiatopia festival (and Southest Asia Performance Art Symposium) being inspired by thoughtful and moving performance artworks and lively dialogue about performance art and cultural democracy in SE Asia.

Too many highlights to name all but I thought I would dedicate my next few blog posts to some of the artists I met there.Natalie Kunsthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03807327700175263352noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4100304925529256410.post-91777019343122036432007-10-31T08:14:00.000-07:002007-11-15T09:08:31.278-08:00A (not so old) favourite<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiQrUkej65zrTmsRTuCo4PLyHIQMR94OFKlbC4qwIaWc1tHfAlm-RDECQI5gzUGtlxUP743OUgNpeuW7hSQmlr2-SHuR81yMaZYpzwUJicYGnp0kwMTH5qpzNzkovnF7JGzi_AdIirNeyM/s400/southern.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5133101763039745922" />
This morning I stumbled across this beautiful, little, dyed pandanus basket in one of my 'places to keep special things'. I remember that I bought this basket in Krabi, but am thinking it must have been 10 years ago, which was well before I began working with natural fibres. Anyway, I estimate that I have moved homes a good 15 times in the last ten years so am impressed that the little basket and I are still together.

Pandanus leaves and this style of weaving are used by women in Southern Thailand; my mother-in-law used to work like this (before she became addicted to daytime TV) and used to always have pandanus drying under and around her house. Most of the older women I know in Krabi have skills in preparing and weaving pandanus for floor mats and I have seen in some of the Urak Lawoi (sea gypsy) communities I have been to, that pandanus weaving is still very much alive. Unfortunately though, so many places in Southern Thailand have become overrun with tourism and invaded by Tescos and Macros that artforms like these and traditional weaving skills are rapidly being lost.Natalie Kunsthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03807327700175263352noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4100304925529256410.post-7164375450340937312007-10-30T08:16:00.000-07:002008-02-22T01:50:06.742-08:00Art/craft debate<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjEpt8zkxX-8ZbgsfLXCpzTRHbSqS6Lus21cBcAlBWey_gAJsRur0_IAA8W0aRaFH6OZi8JPV3tznRLY1r1FSWF7lwoMCEBNJG-ayibEhsHQQ1ltKReEtgYrTe6g6xv6ysKwEn5x6taeRU/s400/footpath.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5132731410837608194" />
On the footpath outside Chatuchak market; whichever way you swing on the art/craft debate, these are great.Natalie Kunsthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03807327700175263352noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4100304925529256410.post-41399513988562668312007-10-26T01:25:00.000-07:002008-02-18T08:09:06.651-08:00TransmigrationSome recently completed works from my Transmigrate series.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEigIu8v6zciSeOLjKNscdc2GsSMfJkfwS12ZjspzjCbbynPzV1cTIZp5_dqQFSP2Gy81E3-nsRrVqHXMAqfRo6gxnJShgolHadVNWe1kF1_pQvGVKMHvzyxWEfGY8vbz9_MKO4UeMoonEk/s400/Transmigrate+new.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5132716752114226882" />

Natalie Kunsthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03807327700175263352noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4100304925529256410.post-68830318721306459332007-10-23T07:15:00.000-07:002007-11-14T08:11:50.210-08:00BurmaBurma has been dominating the headlines the past few weeks. Heavy fisted Than Shwe and his cronies have once again silenced opposition to their regime with violence and blood.

http://www.irrawaddy.org/

In 1993, I became good friends with Ma Khin Mar Mar Kyi (Mar) when we moved into the same house in Bangkok. I had just finished a privledged and exciting backpacking experience around India and Mar had just been forced to leave her home, family and friends in Rangoon and become a political refugee from Burma. Same age, same time, same roof, different lives. Through her personal history, Mar educated (educates) me about the social and political climate that lead to the 8/8/88 political uprisings throughout Burma and the oppression in Burma that continues today. In 1995 Mar migrated to Australia and is now a well recognised Burmese scholar in Australia, researching and working with victims of trafficking, migrant workers and stateless children.

Last year Mar made a presentation Hidden Stories: Cost of Burmese militarization on women and children at Parliament House in Canberra.

Mar and I speak at least weekly and she helps me to understand the complexities and challenges of life for the Burmese, both those inside Burma and those who live in exile. For me it is hard to understand why Burma's neighbours can't just pull together and expel Burma from ASEAN or why the Security Council cannot place Burma higher on it's list of priorities? I know it not as simple as this, but it is frustrating to see it take so long to bring change to Burma. On the other hand, in 1988 very few people in the international community knew what was happening inside Burma. This week, despite the tragic events, it has been great to see the widespread media coverage of Burma.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhgGHDd1PMBShslUUzaYoAWcwdzCfxI0vil9IjGRPM8xHOffV2G3KOK5c5yBVkRjnViX4OAiEvIm_HRYiLnj58H8ijfGU1UZdFFpHNMEuqtyFWLVwxg0hWLEAo0IefXqTrCWZlNWlRXOD4/s400/canb.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5132721940434720482" />
This is a picture I took of Mar in 2002 when we protested at Parliament House in Canberra, Australia on the 15th anniversary of the 1988 political uprising in Rangoon.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgJEes5cPXsw-XROjWgh1qX-oK81zeFg_RD3iJ7whtdTnetWv0Uz-jT8UTPWaBKuXLlXX4bcDsUwFz8TPj9a88zrQjn0QLOhjMafYWgEkZCNfim7DOJX1pcvBVRVH0nMNPrNcOO7H7K41w/s400/laos.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5132723276169549554" />
Mar and I in Laos around 1998.Natalie Kunsthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03807327700175263352noreply@blogger.com0
